St. Martins Island of Bangladesh

St. Martins Island is one of the most beautiful tourist spot of Bangladesh. It’s a Coral Island where you will find live corals. This small coral island about 10km (6mi) southwest of the southern tip of the mainland of Bangladesh is a tropical cliché. Here beaches are full with bountiful marine life and plenty of coconut trees.
You can probably walk around the island by a day. The island measures only 8 sq km, but during high tide it will shrink and become about 5 sq km. The population here is about 5500. Most of them live by fishing. During October to April fisher people from neighboring areas bring their catch to the island's temporary wholesale market. Here the sea water of the beach is clear blue and the visibility in water is much high. So you can enjoy diving here and see the underwater coral. You will find in this Island, the long Coral beach, beautiful Coral reef and lots of coconut trees. The coconut’s local name is ‘Narikel’. For this the original name of this island in ‘Narkel Jinjira’.
There is also a place called Cheera-dwip. It is a part of the St. Martins Island, but it divided during tides. You can go to Cheera-dwip by walking. It can take two and a half hours walking from St. Martins Island. You can also go there by local motorboat or tourist boat. There you will find live and dead Corals all over the Island. The only green part of Cheera-dwip is a small bush, which enhance the beauty of this island. No people lives at Cheera-dwip, so advisable for the tourists to go there early and come back by afternoon.

Transportation
Going to St. Martine is three step program. First you go to Coxbazar by bus or air. From there catch the bus for Teknaf, which is right on the very tip of Bangladesh along with Mayanmar. From Teknaf there are ferries which daily run to St. Martine Island. The total distance from Dhaka to St. Martine is 510km.

Accommodation
From Teknaf, you can visit and see St. Martine Island by a day and come back to Teknaf. In Teknaf accommodation facilities are available. But in St. Martine accommodation is limited. So,it is advisable to book accommodation from Dhaka, if you plan to stay there. There are good hotels like Motel Nijhum, Prasad Paradise and Sraboni Bilash. All these three hotels are situated adjacent to Seashore. You can enjoy the sea from these hotels lobby or veranda. There are also some hotel and motel in the Island. Staying the night in the Island will be an exciting feeling where you can feel and listen the sound of sea.
